George Raft was originally a Taxi-Dancer who earned about seventy-five dollars ( American)
a week dancing with the ladies at a public restaurant-dance
palace called the 'El Fey Club' in New York. Raft would
work with, then unknown Rudolph Valentino and Joan
Sawyer at the El Fey. It was here his past would catch
up with him as a Gigolo.
He was labeled as 'Hollywood's Gigolo'
by many fan magazines, but Raft did not like that term very
much, when asked about it, he would only say 'it did not
apply to him'. Raft went on to become a featured actor in
many movies, even though he started out as a dancer, he
only danced in a few of his movies. In his films Rumba and
Bolero, Veloz
and Yolanda actually did most of the dancing for him.
As time went on he would play more mob or gangster type
roles. More
