Shag, The Movie (aka: The Shag!) |
"Put him down you ape, you'll break him! " |
--
Synopsis: This light " Chick-Flick"
comedy was a dismal failure on the big screen, but became very
popular on video as it plays very cozily on the tube, where it
lends itself to pajama parties and Shag dance parties. It is the
story of four girls who have just graduated from high school in
1963 who hightail it to Myrtle Beach - the forbidden zone of handsome
boys and booze. As three young Southern White girls trick their
soon-to-be-married gal-pal Carson (Phoebe Cates) into one final
all-girl fling in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Cates is engaged
to a local well-bred bore (Tyrone Power Jr.), but soon she's is
tempted by Buzz (Robert Rusler) a beach boy bound for Yale. This
film is not related to the Austin Powers title as this
refers to the dance, not something else.

Many popular, local Carolina Shag dancers of the time. 'Pudge'
and Chip, Caroline and Skip and others practice and enter the
" Sun Fun Shag Contest" and show some very good Carolina
Shag dancing. The Shag is also South Carolina's State Dance. |
