The Collegiate dances were very popular during the 1920s, early 1930s. The Collegiate dances were basically simpler, rougher and/ or wilder version of the other dances of the day, such as the Foxtrot done with plenty of pep and abandon. By the mid 1940's, most of the Collegiate dances were hardly done or the names being changed to something. Generally these dances or versions consisted of jumping and hopping steps and are performed much less formal than that of the older and more dignified dances, using a more crooked elbow and closer posture, while some of the more intricate figures require a much looser hold.
The hopping steps were lively and dignified, they reflected the brisk tempo of a young America in the 1920s. Other collegiate dances such as the Collegiate Foxtrot, Shimmy, Collegiate Shag, Truckin , The Grizzly Bear, The Turkey Trot, and The Bunny Hug etc. were all popular with the Collegiate set. The Collegiate walk was very similar to the Foxtrot. Some of the Collegiate dances had a small revival during the 1950s, the collegiate steps became tamer, such as the Collegiate Foxtrot (aka: One Step) which entered the square dance world, during this time, the dance was eventually to become known as the Texas two-step. The step descriptions for this dance in the 1950's are the same as taught to Country Western Dancers when learning the Texas Two-Step.

Add a little "Yankee Prance" as a variation and use "Foxtrot timing" (Slow-Slow-Quick-Quick) and it becomes the "Texas Two-Step".
