Jim and Louise won the"National Charleston Dance Contest of the World" at the Trianon Ballroom in Chicago February 8th. & 9th, 1926 ( Ginger Rogers took 2nd.) The contest had a $10,000 first prize. Later, they toured for two years in ballrooms and in vaudevilles throughout the country.
The Sullivans were featured in a Fox Newsreel and also appeared in the movie 'The Night They Raided Minskys' years later. Louise also won the Charleston "Singles" contest on 12/24/1925 that was produced by B.F Keiths.
Gloria Sullivan-Cotchonis of La Costa, CA. is the daughter of the Sullivan's who also is a WCS dancer and previous Charleston Champion who on September 2, 1954 with her 1st husband Peter Cranwell, won the KLAC Radio Charleston championships in Los Angeles. She is a member of the San Diego Swing Dance Club. |
