Stage Name

Birth Name

Sally Rand Harriet Helen (Hazel) Gould Beck

Sally left home at the age of thirteen to work as a cigarette girl in a nightclub in Kansas City and a few others before arriving in Hollywood. Originally was an Acrobatic dancer in the Circus and Vaudeville, later in Nightclubs, Movies and Touring shows. In 1927 she would be known as a WAMPAS Baby Star.

Rand started a career in motion pictures, making over 20 silent pictures until the advent of talkies as well as some 16mm films of her dances. After her movie career ended she went on to dance as a chorus girl in various Broadway plays after her movie career. Became famous for her "Lady Godiva routine" that was performed on Mrs. Hearst's yacht and the next day was hired at Chicago's Century of Progress Exposition in 1933. It is said she saved the fair with her unusual Fan Dance (being arrested four times, her first day got lots of publicity).

Rand directed her own "Star Studded Revue" for the Royal American Shows. Miss Rand was also well known for her "Bubble Dance" and "Fan Dance" routines. Rand did her famous fan dance routine well into her seventies. Ms. Rand would become a major star among the Burlesque world of dancing Entertainemnt.
