Joan was an actress not
a dancer, however she would have several roles that required her
to dance, such as appearing opposite Fred Astaire in 'A Damsel
in Distress.'
Joan was the daughter
of actress Lillian Fontaine and sister to Olivia de Haviland.
Joan took her stage name from her stepfather, 'George Fontaine'
in order to not ride on her sister's coat tails. (It was said
that Joan eventually became a bigger star than Olivia.) |
