While living in London she received a Scholarship
to a ballet school and became an accomplished dancer and later
began a modeling career. She really loved modeling and it seemed
to fit her. After being spotted by a movie producer while modeling
she was signed to do the film Nederlands in 7 lessens (1948.)
Later, she had a speaking role in, Young Wives' Tale (1951.)
This would lead her to America where she gained
immediate prominence in the US with her role in "Roman Holiday"
(1953,) in which she also won a Oscar nomination (Best Actress)
for her part in the film. Her modeling days were now officially
over. She also worked with her husband Mel Ferrer in the play
"Ondine" in 1954.
She is quoted as saying:
"I was asked to act when I couldn't act. I was asked to sing
'Funny Face' when I couldn't sing and dance with Fred Astaire when
I couldn't dance - and do all kinds of things I wasn't prepared
for. Then I tried like mad to cope with it."
