Many people thought of Ginger as hailing from Texas, however
she was from Independence, Missouri. Her father was William
Eddins McMath and her mother was Lela Owens McMath. Ginger
arrived in Hollywood in 1931 and would play a sixteen year
old flapper opposite Claudette Colbert. She would later
receive an Oscar awardfor
her role in Kitty Foyle. Ginger's main claim to fame was
with dancer Fred
Astaire, however, she would make many movies over time
with many different actors/ dancers. She was a very talented
actress.
Ginger got her career start by winning the Texas State
Charleston
dance contest finals (her second year attempt) on
November 9th, 1925 at the Baker Hotel in Dallas, Texas.
Her prize was a medal and a four week engagement on the
Interstate Circuit (Vaudeville). She was billed
as "Ginger and the Redheads" and later "Ginger
and Pepper" (with Jack Culpepper).
