Céleste |
Céleste means 'heavenly'
in French (Anglicized form) and was not far from the
truth. Celeste was born in France but raised in England trained
at the Music Academy and became a "Heavenly" dancer.
Celeste made her very first stage debut at the Bowery Theatre,
New York, in 1827 as a dancer. She performed on the Mississippi
and Missouri circuits in ballet and pantomime roles in the 1830s
and was well known for her rendition of the Cachucha Dance, and
toured and starred extensively in John Baldwin Buckstone's "The
Green Bushes" through out the 1850's as an actress and spectacle
performer but achieved her greatest role as the wild Arab boy
in "the French Spy."
Celeste, along with Benjamin Webster
became the Adelphi theatre's Manager / Director from 1845 until
1857 and was the theatre's choreographer in 1846. After her very
successful international dance career, she retired from dance
and became primarily a star status actress in melodrama's and
pantomimes, occasionally dancing on the Stage when her part called
for it.
