Carmencita was a very famous and
popular Spanish Gypsy dancer during the 1890s. She traveled the
world from Paris to the USA doing her Spanish dances such as the
El Jaleo, Flamenco and Gypsy dances during the 1890's. John Singer
Sargent was an avid admire ant artist who did many paintings of
her.
The Library of Congress states
that: "Carmencita, with her Spanish dances, had become a
celebrated stage star in 1889 and remained so until she returned
to Europe at the end of 1894. Numerous journalists tried to describe
her appeal. According to one New York Times reviewer, she was
'impossible and admirable,' while possessing an 'apparently untaught
abandon rarer than grace'."
Thomas Edison made a Kinetoscopic
Record (a 1 minute film) of Carmencita and was titled same. It
was one of the first in this line of new Films and the first to
show dance on film. The filmmakers were W. K. L. Dickson and William
Heise. Cast only consisted of Carmencita and was shot in mid March
