Phyllis 'Bebe' Virginia Daniels |
American Actress, Dancer, Writer, Producer and Singer ... Bebe Daniels already had toured as an actor by the age of four in a stage production of Richard III and The Squaw Man in the US, she had her first leading role at the age of seven (A Common Enemy) and started her film career shortly after this in movies for Imperial, Pathe and others. At 14 she was already a film veteran. She was the infamous flapper that most men of the day feared and loved in many of her movies.
Her mother (Phyllis Griffin Daniels (b. 1874, d. 20-Feb-1959) was a star theatrical entertainer and father (Melville Daniel MacMeal ("Danny Daniels", b. 1864, d. 1930) was a theatrical manager. Daniels started her career as a child and was a product of the Jazz age. Started her movie career with the "Selig Polyscope Company," and later moved to the "Hal Roach's studios" in 1915 at the age of fourteen and by 1919 would be working at the Paramount Studios. During her stay at Roach's studio she would make over 200 short subject silent films. Bebe made the transition from Silent's to Talkies without a hitch.
She became an adult star by 1922 and by 1924 was playing opposite Rudolph Valentino in "Monsieur Beaucaire." Daniels' charisma, gorgeous singing voice and dramatic skill helped her move easily from silent films to talkies, making her a musical and dramatic star, most notably in "Rio Rita" (1929). She starred as leading lady to comedian Harold Lloyd in his early "Lonesome |
 |
| Luke" and "Glasses Character" and other silent slapstick comedies and dramas. When sound arrived, Bebe transitioned nicely due to her beautiful singing voice. Although not a dancer she did dance in some of her films. Daniels last USA film was "Music is Magic" in 1935.
Bebe married Ben Lyons in 1930 and they retired to England sometime around the mid 1930's, only to star in their own show for BBC "Life with the Lyons" in the 50's. Bebe's husband Ben Lyon was in the film "Hell's Angels" (a Howard Hughes production) which also featured Jean Harlowe. The Lyons (Bebe & Ben) then did radio and Television shows for the BBC. Daniels Uncle was Lee DeForest, major pioneer in Television and sound on film technology for Motion Pictures and was the inventor of the Orthocon Ray Tube.
They had two children, Barbara and Richard, who later costarred with their parents in a weekly British radio program and a television series that ran 1955 to 1960 called, "Life With the Lyons."
By all accounts, Bebe was a popular actress, not only with her fans but also with her co-workers as well. In 1921, the young actress was arrested for speeding. Sentenced to spending 10 days in jail and was even a hit there as well... Paramount made a film about it called "The Speed Girl." In 1931 Bebe had a stalker fan by the name of Albert F. Holland who was a disabled Veteran and was put in Custody on Insanity complaints for stalking Bebe. He was released two years later (1933) and was immediately back stalking her and had to goto court again. (click here for photo and wire note on back).
On March 16, 1971, Daniels died of a cerebral hemorrhage in London at the age of 70 and her husband Ben died eight years later of a heart attack. Her remains were cremated at London's Golders Green Crematorium and the ashes returned to the United States; she was interred in the Chapel columbarium at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Hollywood, California. |
