Stage Name

Birth Name

Ava Gardner

Ava Lavinia Gardner

Ava's mother, Mary Elizabeth 'Molly' Gardner, nee Baker; and her father, Jonas Gardner named her after her Grandmother. The youngest of seven children ... four sisters and two brothers. Ava is said to have grew up on a poor Tobacco Plantation in North Carolina, but this may not be true.

Ava got her start from an MGM executive seeing her picture in a photography studio. Ava went to Hollywood and on her very first screen test, the results were sent to Louis B. Mayer which stated: "She can't sing, she can't act, she can't talk, She's terrific!" and was almost hired on the spot with a standard studio contract with her first part being in "We were Dancing" in 1941. Once there the studios went to work on her and the first thing was a speaking coach to help curve her heavy southern drawl. Off-screen she was known for bawdy language and humor and a free spirit. She appeared mainly in small roles until she finally drew attention with her performance in " The Killers" in 1946. Her first starring role howeve would not be until 1946 in 'Whistle Stop' by Universal Pictures. She was considered one of the most beautiful actresses to ever appear on film and is in the top 25 actresses of all time.

After three failed marriages and somewhat dissatisfed with hollywood, Ava moved to Spain around 1957 and later to London after tax issues in Spain. While in Spain, Ava fell in love with the Flamenco which she performed earlier in the 'Barefoot Contessa' in 1954. It is said she loved to dance and would do it all night long. She also became very fascinated with the Bullfighting world and would often be seen at Bullfighting arenas.

In many of her quotes on her time in Hollywood, they all seemed pretty negative. After her retirement from motion pictures in 1982, Ava primarily worked in the Television field during the remainder of the 1980s, mainly for the money. After a lifetime of smoking, Gardner suffered from emphysema, a terminal disease, in addition to an auto-immune disorder (which may have been Lupus). Ava had two strokes in 1986 which left her partially paralyzed and bedridden. She died of pneumonia at the age of 67. Gardner died at her London home, 34 Ennismore Gardens, where she had lived since 1968.
