Ann Pennington

Stage Name, aka

Birth Name

Ann Pennington Anna Pennington
Penny, Tiny

Ann Pennington was very popular and known as the most petite (4' 9" tall) of what was then called the "Shake and Quiver dancers." Became famous for her rendition of the Black Bottom dance. She began her career on Broadway as a member of the chorus in The Red Widow (1911) and made her debut in the Ziegfeld Follies in 1913, She actually stopped the show when she danced for Ziegfeld in his 1913 Follies. It was no wonder that she quickly rose as one Ziegfeld's top stars of the show and sometimes earning a salary of $1000 per week at one point in her career.

Ann Pennington danced many dances as well as the Black Bottom, Charleston and could tap dance as well as any male performer. She also danced in some of George White's Shows ("Scandals") and was a "Gold Digger Girl." She played a few minor supporting roles on film in the early 1940's and continued dancing and appearing on Stage and vaudeville well into the late 1940s then retiring.
