Alvin Ailey

Stage Name

Birth Name

Alvin Ailey Alvin Ailey

African-American choreographer who would win many awards for his Choreography as well as being a dancer. Moved to Los Angeles in the early 1940s and studied dance with Catherine Dunham, Lester Horton and later with Martha Graham.

Alvin Ailey was a very talented choreographer but suffered from depression at times, finally succumbing to AIDS on December 1, 1989. He is most famous for his dance troupe, the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater founded in 1958 and teaching dance to inner city kids.

I have seen this dance group in person and they are fantastic. Today the Alvin Ailey Dance theatre travels all around the world and even danced on "So You Think You Can Dance" which

was a big hit. There is so much written on the net about this man and his legacy I won't be able to offer much here... So if your looking for more info, try here first ... Alvin Ailey Org.

Burial place: Rose Hills Memorial Park Whittier (Los Angeles County) CA, USA.
