'Trouble' was said to be her middle name. Daughter of a South Texas bricklayer and harmonica player. Ran away from home at a young age, entrapped into forced prostitution, escaping it she found her way to the Burlesque stage making over $2000 dollars a week. Candy became a cocktail waitress by age fourteen and got her start in Burlesque by working as a cigarette girl at Barney Weinstein's Theater Lounge in downtown Dallas at age seventeen.
It was Weinstein who gave her the stage name of Candy Barr (Candy loved Snickers Bars), bleached her hair platinum blonde (on occasion would be red) and would work at in many burlesque clubs as well as Jack Ruby's Las Vegas Club around 1952 (Ruby gunned down Lee Harvey Oswald) and was allegedly romantically involved with mobster Mickey Cohen for a time (She was the star attraction right next door to Ruby's called the Colony Club, which was her home base for years.) |

Barr established herself in burlesque and striptease with her trademark costume (see photo) and being from Texas her gimmick was that she donned a cowboy hat, pasties, scant panties and cowboy boots oh and can not forget a pair of real pearl handled six (cap) shooters in a holster strapped low on her shapely hips, all matching of course. However she didn't really need a gimmick as she could dance well. It has been written that Candy was the first Porn Star (in Smart Alec) at age fifteen.
Candy Barr, became the most infamous exotic dancer, Burlesque Star, Stripper and Blue Movie headliner in Texas history,

which they are quite proud of her. Candy appeared regularly on the front of and in the centerfolds of all of the famous pinup magazines of the era.
Candy trained Joan Collins for the movie 'Seven Thieves' in 1959 just before she got fifteen years in prison (but only served three year and four months) in 1959 for possessing less than an ounce of marijuana and received a full pardon on August 3, 1966 and arrested again in 1969 for similar charges. Earlier in 1956 ... she shot her (violent) husband when he broke down the door to get inside her apartment, thankfully he was not badly hurt and the charges were dropped, however, later it was reported that he would be shot to death by another.
She used to be the center of attention, both scandalized and adoring, the aging Candy said later in life "she now just asks to be left alone." She retired in Edna, Texas (pop 5000) where she worked at a local grocery store for a few years. However she did make a few appearances here and there. According to the Associated Press Candy passed away in Abilene, Texas of Pneumonia on January 1st, 2006 at the at the age of 70 but was actually Victoria, Texas. Her burial was in her hometown of Edna, Texas. Candy had one daughter and granddaughter.
